Up (Pete Doctor, Bob Pierson; 2009)

In terms of narrative, Up has inspired us through the strong relationship with his wife established at the beginning of the film, to him then becoming bitter and showing a general hatred for people, young people in particular. Through his journey, the gap between the younger and older generation is bridged and a new relationship and a happier way of living is found.

Although this is an animation, it really encapsulates the character profile we would like to achieve for our elderly man or woman - the general grumpiness of an elderly person (fed up with the youth of today) combined with their own sad past that perhaps contributes to their current outlook on life.
The disruption of the equilibrium is the little boy scout which is similar to the narrative arc of our drama as we would like the grandchild of the widow (or widower) to disrupt the equilibrium of our drama. When she arrives into the grandfather/grandmother's household, the equilibrium is disrupted as they argue, Daisy storms out and the elderly person believes their marbles have been taken in spite.

Similar to the journey in Up, the elderly person embarks on a journey to find the marbles and return to sanity, however, along the way, the granddaughter is following the whole time recollecting the marbles that are falling out of their pocket. At the end, they stand at her husband's grave and equilibrium is restored.
